Oahu Day 3

We got lost on the way to church and found ourselves in the Pearl Harbor area. So Brandon and Michael became TRUE tourists with the history headphones.

The Arizona Memorial is placed directly above the USS Arizona, which sunk on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked the United States in Pearl Harbor. There are bits of the USS Arizona which stick above the water. The ship still releases a small amount of oil into the water.

We had been to a lot of "touristy" attractions and were around a lot of Asian tourists with their signature peace sign in each picture. Obviously they were rubbing off on us.

Let me introduce you to mother and baby mongoose. While planning this trip some friends told me about a hotel in Oahu that had a sign in each room which read something like this, "Warning: Do not leave food out. It may attract bugs, cockroaches, lizards... and/or mongooses." I have to admit I didn't know what a mongoose was. I was picturing a bird. Not so and here is the proof. We saw them running around everywhere. And luckily nowhere near our hotel or condo just running across the road.

We were also able to visit the USS Bowfin, a WWII submarine. We didn't go on the tour (you had to pay and we are cheap). But we all enjoyed the information and hands on areas.

Boys will be boys, but the girls like to play too.

Then off to the Iolani Palace. It was closed already, but we got a chance to walk around and cooling off in the shade.

Across the street from the palace was the Statue of Kamehameha, the first king of the unified Hawaiian Islands in front of the Ali`iolani Hale, the Supreme Court. The following photo was taken by a Japanese tourist who didn't speak or understand a word of English. He was using my big SLR camera and couldn't figure where to find the viewfinder. Good thing his girlfriend spoke English or he would probably still be looking for it. After the tramatic photo we sat on the grass and craved ice cream.

We didn't get any photos from dinner at Duke's, which has the BEST salad bar ever! The night will always be remembered for banana muffins and Brandon asking the server, "...for FREEEEE?"

I thought you might have your pictures up. Wow!!! What a trip. I love all those great scenic pictures. Some look like postcards. Now you've truly gotten me excited to go. We'll talk more when I get back.
